Time to build the roof

“The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining.” So said JFK apparently, and the same seems to be true of the time to build the roof. The sun has been beating down on us and the house has gone upwards. The second floor joists and floorboards are now in place and so are the roof rafters. The roof is being built! It gives a real idea about what our house will look like when the work is finished – very exciting. I haven’t envied the builders though as they have been finding it incredibly hot up there. It’s been hot enough anyway (yes, I have used the word “scorchio” on more than one occasion, so it must have been!) without working on a roof, but they haven’t let the heat slow them down.

What might slow things down is the windows and front door: on Wednesday we were given the brochure from which to choose the front door and told that the door and windows needed to be ordered immediately so that they don’t hold things up. There’s a four or five week lead time for the door and windows and once the roof is complete, this is the next crucial step. Once they’re in place the new house can be secured and the internal demolition can begin. The roof could be completed much more quickly with the introduction of an extra team of roofers but this would be an error at this stage as they would then reach a point where they were likely to have nothing to do for a couple of weeks whilst waiting for the arrival of the doors and windows. We made our decisions about the door as quickly as possible with a last minute trip to Camberley Glass and now need to work out if there are any more decisions to be made that we should be researching.
